The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) is a state agency that reports to Virginia’s Secretary of Transportation. DRPT’s mission is to facilitate and improve the mobility of people and promote the efficient transport of goods and people in a safe, reliable, and cost-effective manner. DRPT works with local, regional, state, and federal governments and with private entities to support projects and programs that expand transportation choices in the Commonwealth through rail, public transportation, and commuter services.
If you already use transit, you can still take the pledge and be entered to win prizes.* Try Transit Week is a great time to keep up the good work and spread the word about the benefits of transit, such as cost savings and traffic congestion relief.
The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) reports that people who switch from driving to taking transit can save an average of more than $847 per month or over $10,000 a year! Switching to transit means saving on gas costs, tolls, car maintenance bills, and parking fees. Find out how much you can save on gas with APTA’s fuel savings calculator — and give transit a try during Try Transit Week.
Taking transit on a regular basis is a great way for Virginians to help improve the environment. Switching to transit reduces carbon emissions and gasoline consumption, saving the United States 4.2 billion gallons of gasoline annually, according to APTA. Buses and other forms of transit have also become more environmentally friendly; many buses are electric hybrid vehicles or run on natural gas.
* Only one pledge per participant. See TryTransitVA.org for complete contest rules and regulations.
